Ghostface does nothing of meaning in Manhat…Canada.

Spoilers are very few. I tried.

No New York backgrounds after the opening shot. The poster has more computer-created NY shots than what the movie gives us. We get some good sets with the theater (ala part 2), the subway, and the ladder rescue. The convenience store scene is the best scene and most enjoyable. Jason spent more time in NY than in this movie.

Over dramatic, everyone getting stabbed but running around like they are fine is tiresome.

For example, 110-pound Devyn Nekoda gets her guts ripped apart by a grown man, but just goes, “Well, I’m losing a lot of blood here.” But Dewey, who Lillard, Ulrich, nor Olyphant could kill, gets disemboweled by (also) 110-pound sunken-eyed Amber, who had just taken 3 rounds point blank to the chest.

We have the “too modern for my tastes” takes on how characters are presented. Remember when Stu and Randy both run-up in the first film? Randy is stabbed, and Stu is sweating and limping, and Sid says, “Fuck you both.”

Very convincing.

Jenna Ortega is still underwhelming to me. Also, thanks for playing Samara Weaving; here’s your participation ribbon.

The modern “Meta” storytelling ruins it for me. It’s supposed to be fun, and I think the “meta” verse is starting to run its course. It’s too on the nose, and for me, it sucks the fun out of it. It worked better when you didn’t point it out so much.

Let’s talk about the killer(s?). Ghostface didn’t accomplish anything this time around—literally nothing. When you watch it, stop and think about it…. You’ll see what I mean. The motives…. Okay, I buy that. The execution of the plan was fine, I guess, if not a little lackluster.

There were many things that just didn’t sell me on the situation. Whereas 5 wasn’t plausible in killer execution, at least they accomplished something. The inconsistencies of 5s killers are way easier to take in 6 due to the killer (s?) circumstances. 6’s Ghostface itself had more personality, but the actual reveal of that person gave you the most bland people in the cast. 6 gave Ghostface himself more personality, and I enjoyed that. His animation, his patience, his need to rampage diabolically.

Whereas 5 felt like a VR playthrough of 1. 6 had much of the same feeling for 2 but with a better ending set piece.

Some people love 5. Critics and fans love 6. 5 and 6 are just okay for me. Scream 5 gets a 5.8 for me, while 6 is probably a 6.2 based solely on Ghostface’s brashness. Not the people playing Ghostface but the killer itself. His savagery was solid. Ghostface had a much-needed anger in him even if the killing was extremely and seriously implausible.

A guy came into the store and told me how rewatchable it was. After seeing it, I thought, “ We really have learned to accept any entertainment as viable now. Even myself.” Ghostface made it more fun.

Scream 6: Cannon Fodder Over Canada. The requel/sequel/reboot at least stays consistently… okay. It’s still better than Halloween Ends and Kills. I don’t know how much steam this franchise has left for me…. And that’s coming from someone who watched the first one 12 times in the first three days I had it on VHS—glimpses of hope before the dying light.

With the second viewing, I had more fun with it on a less critical scale. The ending was a lot more fun after knowing the reveals and surprises.

Still better than 5, but at the end of it… nothing happened. You don’t get stabbed with a hunting knife 20 times and live.

If you do you are not up running around like it’s a Monty Python flesh wound.

The reality is this was just to further Sam’s own mental journey, with a pesky killer story getting in the way. Because nothing actually happened. It’s fun and enjoyable, though. It will probably simmer better in a few years. 5 took a year for me to rewatch and finally enjoy it. 6 took a day to rewatch and find it more fun. The ending is fun, for sure.

Whether it’s the next movie or two movies from now, Sam will be the killer after she takes out either Stu Macher’s sister or her own father.

Mark my words.

Did Ghostface take Manhattan? Eh, more like proved to be a minor annoyance.
