Trading in the traditional “Cabin in the Woods” set-piece for an urban apartment, Lee Cronin’s 2023 (indirect) sequel to 2013’s Evil Dead, is a claustrophobic splat-fest with a hint of family drama and psychological horror. Loaded with subtle (and not-so-subtle) callbacks, visceral practical effects, and body horror, Evil Dead Rise feels right at home in the franchise.

If you’ve recently finished Evil Dead Rise, and are looking for more visceral single location horror, fear not, we’ve prepared a list of 5 films that are sure to scratch the itch.

Pontypool

Pontypool (Bruce McDonald) is a 2008 Canadian Zombie film that takes the concept of “language as a virus” literally.

Taking place entirely within a small radio station, the film plays out in three acts.

The first is akin to a radio drama — we hear the horror unfolding outside the radio station in full detail via call-ins and news reports. The second resembles a traditional zombie movie as the zombies invade the station. The final act is a surreal experience, unlike anything you’ve seen in a traditional zombie movie.

Note: this one is a little more abstract than the other films on the list and might sometimes seem a bit unapproachable. Hang in there; it is absolutely worth it.
