In my opinion, this is one of the most important horror films of all time because of the degree of its influence on the zombie genre—predating Night of the Living Dead and influencing Romero. I don’t even think it’s arguable….. it just is.

A wind-carried virus destroys the world, and one man is left to spend every day alone fighting off the zombified vampire hordes while still trying to find the secret to the world’s end. The zombies/ vampires still retain slight pieces of their humanity. They still can remember things from their past, speak in sentences, and use objects as weapons.

But is he all alone as the last human?

This was the first adaptation of this novel, and a decade later, Charlton Heston would play the lead in The Omega Man. Many decades later, Will Smith would play the lead in I Am Legend. All quality works, but this will be influential for decades to come.

Kino Lorber’s stand-alone Blu-ray release is a straight transfer from the Shout/ Scream Factory Vincent Price Collection 2, which has been OOP and is going for $250 online. So you should pick this up if you see it. The image looks excellent while still retaining some scratches here and there. It’s in widescreen format and not boxed in the middle like so many DVD releases of this movie from the last two decades.
